What Does It Mean to Truly Know God?

There is a difference between knowing about God and knowing God. Many people grow up hearing Bible stories, attending church, or learning Christian language — yet still feel distant from God. Knowing God is not about information or religious activity; it is about relationship. Jesus made this very clear when He prayed: “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” — John 17:3 (NKJV) Eternal life is not just something we receive after death. It begins the moment we enter into a real, living relationship with God.

Knowing God Is Relational, Not Religious

Religion often focuses on rules, performance, and outward behaviour. A relationship focuses on connection, trust, and love. From the very beginning, God desired relationship with humanity. He walked with Adam and Eve, spoke with them, and shared life with them. Sin disrupted that closeness, but God never stopped pursuing us. Through Jesus, relationship was restored. “God has invited us into the very life of his Son.” — 1 Corinthians 1:9 (TPT) Having a relationship with God means learning His heart — His kindness, patience, mercy, and faithfulness. It means discovering that He is not distant or disappointed, but deeply personal and lovingly involved in your life.

Knowing God Is Not About Earning His Love

Many people unknowingly try to earn God’s approval. They believe that if they pray more, try harder, or live better, God will finally be pleased with them. But the Bible tells a different story: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8 (NKJV) God’s love came first. Before change. Before growth. Before understanding. We don’t obey to be loved — we obey because we are loved. When this truth settles in your heart, everything changes. Prayer becomes conversation instead of obligation. Obedience becomes a response of love, not fear. A relationship with God is there for the taking.

Growing in your Relationship with God Takes Time

Like any meaningful relationship, knowing God deepens through time spent together. Jesus said: “Abide in Me, and I in you… for without Me you can do nothing.” — John 15:4–5 (NKJV) To abide means to remain, to stay connected, to live aware of His presence. This can look like: Talking to God throughout your day Reading Scripture with an open heart Pausing to listen rather than rushing Inviting God into your decisions Over time, you begin to recognise His peace, His guidance, and His gentle leading.

Having a Relationship with God Changes How You See Yourself

When you truly know God, your identity begins to heal. You are no longer defined by your mistakes, your past, or others’ opinions. You begin to see yourself through His eyes. “See how very much our Father loves us, for He calls us His children—and that is what we are!” — 1 John 3:1 (NLT) Knowing God brings security, confidence, and freedom. You begin to live from acceptance rather than striving for it.

Reflection on Your Relationship with God

Take a quiet moment to reflect: Do I relate to God more as a judge or a loving Father? What has shaped my understanding of God — experiences, people, or Scripture? What would change if I truly believed God wants a relationship with me?

A Gentle Prayer to Build Your Relationship with God

Father God, I want to know You, not just know about You. Teach me to recognise Your voice and trust Your heart. Help me release fear, striving, and old beliefs that keep me distant from You. Draw me closer, and help me grow in relationship with You each day. Amen.
